Take the book and bike!
I used their first edition for my first bike trip in 1991, and can't recommend it enough. I really didn't have any other bike book then, and this one got me across Italy, through part of France, and across Germany. I used the same edition a couple years later, and it was still helpful. The advice was all clear, particular the directions--what to look for, where to turn. Maps were good. I've had time over the years to compare it to a couple other bike touring books, and this was clearly the best. Roads change, of course, and I hope to see new editions.

Qualms
I found the book to be quite informative, however there is one problem that I found. The reader/rider can only do the tour in the direction in which the tours take place in the book due to the fact that the directions are given one way. I just finished a tour using this book and thought that I may be able to maneuver from the end of a tour and go toward the beginning with the help of some good maps. If I had a one Euro cent for every time I got lost I would have been Trump by the end of the trip. I did a tour in the U.S. with maps and directions that went both directions... north AS WELL AS south and east AS WELL AS west. The directions are impossible to follow unless you are going in the Whitehill's prescribed direction. Aside from that, information regarding campgrounds and distances is extremely on target and helpful.

Europe by Bike 1991 edition
I used the 1991 book to plan my 2002 solo biking trip from Salzburg, Austria to Budapest, Hungary. 11 years later I found their directions were still quite accurate. That trip was an absolute delight.I am now planning another solo bike trip in September 2006 that will follow the Whitehill's route from Brussels Belgium to Versailles, France to Angers, France and back to Versailles.

An Amazing Journey
I was recommended this book thru a friend at Adventure Cycling. Its a truly amazing human story from an author who has had to conquer a mountain to make his ride to recovery. A great read.....

Product Description

I'm on two simultaneous journey's. The first is through poor mental health, and the second involves a bicycle. Since adolescence, my life has been plagued with emotional distress. Six years ago I faced a major breakdown, the fourth, and by far the most intense to date.

I lost my career as a teacher, my home, and everything else as the storm ravaged my mind. After three family deaths, and four years, I took a holiday in Scotland where I met several cycle tourists. It reminded me of how much I used to enjoy cycling myself, some eighteen years previously.

On my return I bought a bicycle, the adventure began, and my recovery started. This is my story, from the darkest days of the breakdown, to the joy of completing a 4000 mile charity cycle ride around the coast of the UK. It's an honest and open account of the long road to the start, as well as a detailed, and at times funny account,of the four months I spent on the road.

From the outset of preparation, I wanted to communicate openly about living with mental health problems. I wanted to raise awareness, in order to reduce stigma. I also decided early on the I would support a charity and raise funds for t Sustrans. As builders of the National Cycle Network, I have them to thank for the trails that allowed me the freedom to ride again.

The ride itself led me through many incredible places where I stood in awe of the scenery,or simply talked to the people around me. Riding unsupported and living in a tent for four months, I rediscovered a forgotten, simple life, and a place where I could manage my health from day to day.

My journey continues and plans are afoot for a seconfd journey in 2012. Another step forward as I continue Riding2Recovery.

The best book about cycling the USA of the nineties!
Seriously, it's good. You should try it.Okay, it was written fourteen years ago, but that just adds to its quaintness.A trip back in time before the blogosphere, before the iPod, before Amazon. Why this was not published when Little, Brown had the chance I really don't know.Enjoy.

In 1998 the author set off to find out what he wanted to do when he grew up. He didn't manage that, but he did discover that when you are riding a bicycle in the United States, everybody thinks you are strange. As they say over there, "go figure."

So he did. He figured out how to cycle from Miami to Maine, from Maine to Minnesota and all the way down to New Orleans. Where he took a break. Top to learn more

In an effort to protect bicycle manufacturers against litigious cyclists who can’t properly use a quick release, most bicycles are now fitted with small tabs on the fork-ends that hold the wheel in place even when the quick release is undone. In races, the quick release allows the team mechanics, who follow the race in a team car with spare wheels, to change our wheels within seconds. Sadly, the tabs, or lawyer’s lips, defeat the purpose of the quick and handy mechanism — it slows wheel removal, and the rider is required to re-adjust the quick release with each use. Full of regrets, I wished I had a quick release on my wheel instead of nuts, or that I had simply packed a wrench in my seat bag. The rear hub had nuts on either side, not a quick release, and I was without a wrench to remove it. As I stood at the roadside, contemplating my options, the cold sunk deeper into my body. The quick release is a wonderfully simple mechanism that hasn’t changed or been improved upon since Tullio Campagnolo invented the modern version in 1930. A light pull of a quick release’s lever allows the wheel to come out. With quick releases, there is no need to carry a wrench, they can be undone with frozen hands and they save precious seconds in a race. Quick releases are just as secure as nuts and their levers fit flush with the frame avoiding a protruding hazard. The quick release is an innovation that, like the bicycle itself, is simple and efficient. His hands were too cold to undo the frozen wing nuts on his hub, and he was unable to remove the wheel to change the tire.
